When I first met the team making Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style game of building similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I informed them that the project would be bigger than they thought. Although they have extensive experience in developing software and servers running a massive game like Deepworld requires a significant investment. It appears they are now are in agreement. Kickstarter was created to raise funds early for development and servers. Mc list Mc list

The group is offering a range of prizes to its members such as your own servers and worlds, as well as art books and other swag. You also have the option of purchasing your own items as well as names and images for the game. The goal is to raise US$20,000 in total, and as of this writing, the guys have raised about $4,000. They intend to make the project a full-time occupation, and this money will allow them to do that.

I hope they have a great time. Deepworld looks nice and, as I stated when I first saw it I think the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game that's like this.
