Mojang is allegedly developing a real-time strategy spin-off of Minecraft, according to Giant Bomb co-founder Jeff Gerstmann.

Gerstmann, a former member of the site for 14 years, took to Twitch recently to discuss his future post Giant Bomb, and all things videogames. ResetEra shares Gerstmann's overview of the project and his impressions so far about an hour into the stream. "There's an upcoming Minecraft spin-off," he said. news for dummies "Microsoft appears as though they are testing it out and putting out the codename and other basic stuff." He also said that he had taken screenshots of the game and said that it looked like a realtime strategy game.

The unnamed spin-off will see players commanding a unit that looks like Steve, and directing units from a third person perspective to defeat enemy factions like Piglins. Gerstmann said that there will be some story and cutscenes but that they are still in the early stages.

Gerstmann wasn't sure if it would be something that we'd see at the Xbox showcase on June 12. news for dummies "It's so far along that maybe it's something Microsoft will announce sometime over the next few weeks or so," he said. "But who the hell knows? I don’t know what their plans for it are, I just sort of saw the screens to get a rough idea of what it looked.

It's plausible to assume Mojang has been playing with the idea of putting Minecraft in different genres-dungeon-crawler spin-off Minecraft: Dungeons was very successful and received a respectable score from Rachel Watts who wrote a review. Double Eleven, the co-developer of that game, has been actively recruiting for an RTS game with a major IP, increasing the likelihood of it being made. It's important to keep rumors in check until official announcements are made.

This is technically not the first Minecraft RTS concept. Brendan Sullivan, who applied for Mojang in 2019, created a beautiful prototype. It's no surprise that he was offered the job. If a Minecraft RTS looked like this, I wouldn't be mad about it.
