The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza path. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. נווה פריצקי Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin and Moshe Lion, the Mayor. Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists also attended.



"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists due to its glorious past. Elkin said that the present tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem's historical treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. "The opening (of this tunnel project) is an additional part of the expansion of Jerusalem and it's transformation into a sought-after tourist destination for all kinds of visitors throughout Israel and around the globe."

Elkin who's ministry in charge of the project with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in Jerusalem's tourist development and also in the creation of new activities and ventures that will connect the magnificent historical past and future of Jerusalem. I encourage all cyclists to come and take a ride along the new, well-maintained and modern route which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

The project was funded by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the vision to change the way of thinking and transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths within the city, as well as the ones that will be constructed within the diverse areas. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycle riding among its residents, and to promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem."

In the 90s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used as an infrastructure tunnel and houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
