Neve Paritzki Jerusalems first cycling tunnel is inaugurated in Israel

The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.

The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bike tunnel, opened as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. The southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once very well-known tourist destination due to its rich history. Elkin said that, today along with its historic treasures, the tunnel project also encompasses modern day tourism. "The inauguration (of this tunnel project) is a further step in the expansion of Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into a sought-after tourist destination for all kinds of people in Israel as well as around the world."

Elkin, whose ministry was in charge of the project with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels every year in Jerusalem's tourist development and in the development of new activities and ventures that connect the stunning historical past and the future of Jerusalem. I would like to invite cyclists everywhere to visit and enjoy the contemporary, well-maintained road which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.
